The interference in TOC determination of wastewater was basically solved by use of the conception of normalization method in sample treatment, such as suspended solids, coexistence ions (sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, chloride, sulfur, etc.), high levels of inorganic carbon (IC), high alkali and highsalt. The determination of TOC in wastewater is normalized. Also the correlation between TOC and CODCr in water in Shandong Province was studied. For example, the wastewater of paper making, breweries, dyeing, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, starch, MSG, rubber, chemicals, coke, power plant, sewage treatment plant and surface water, and drinking water. It proves that TOC has a very good correlation with CODCr under the condition of normalization and restricted determination zone. It also founds a new method of COD determination by interpolation of the TOC coefficient method.
