Abstract: Sidebranching of dendrites during solidification of pure Ni melt was studied via simulation by using a modified phasefield model which incorporates both structural fluctuation and energetic fluctuation. The results indicate that with increasing undercooling, side branching intensifies and neck shrinkage can be found in the trunk. The trunk will probably rupture when convection happens, and will result in spontaneous grain refinement in deeply undercooled melts.
