Abstract: In order to reduce hardware complexity of mobile devices, a new transmission scheme was proposed based on transmit antenna selection and switch-and-examine combining. The probability density function of the signal-to-noise ratio was used to generate the moment generating functions for phase shift keying modulation, quadrature amplitude modulation, and pulse amplitude modulation. By integrating the moment generating functions, the exact average symbol error probability expressions were derived. The exact closed-form outage probability expressions were also derived by integrating the probability density function of the signal-to-noise ratio. The simulation results showed that the system performance was improved with the transmitting/receiving antennas and the fading coefficient increased, while the fading factor decreased.
