Abstract: Cutting chatter is an undesirable dynamic state frequently occurred in high-speed machining and high-precision machining system. As a complex physical phenomenon, cutting chatter has the characteristics of high dimension, non-smooth, strong nonlinear and variable parameters as well as time-delay effect, which makes it becomes the key difficulties and challenges to study for dynamics of mechanical system. The nonlinearity that has always been recognized as an essential element in machining is the direct reason for nonlinear chatter occurrence. Understanding nonlinear dynamics helps to reveal the essence of unstable phenomena in cutting processes and provide ideas for eliminating chatter problems. A critical review of the nonlinearities in machining system including cutting force and machine tool structure, friction between tool and chip/workpiece, loss of contact between tool and workpiece, etc., was presented, and the available approaches for solving nonlinear models were summarized. Nonlinear bifurcation, periodic and quasiperiodic response and chaos phenomena in cutting process wre briefly introduced. Some open problems and a few possible research directions in future were suggested.

Key words: metal cutting, nonlinear chatter, bifurcation, chaos, stability
