Abstract: A new calculating formula was put forward to directly compute conjugate water depth of the trapezoidal channel, which can resolve the disadvantage of existing formulae, such as the complex computing course, low precision and small using area. By introducing a nondimensional parameter——unit water surface width and doing the identical exchange to the basic equation of conjugate water depth of the trapezoidal channel, the iterative formula was obtained, which can work with the proper initial value for the iteration. A direct calculating formula of conjugate water depth of the trapezoidal channel was deduced. The error analysis and appliance showed that the maximum error in the common area of engineering was 11%. Compared with existing formulae, this formula has relatively easy form, wide using area and high precision.

Key words: trapezoidal open channel, hydraulic jumps, conjugate water depth, direct method, unit surface width
